Historical Context: Prior storage in an Odd Fellows lodge led to significant accumulation of internal and environmental debris over decades of exposure.
Material Hazards: High toxicity. Historic preparations of this era heavily relied on hazardous heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, lead) for preservation and injection coloring. Remediation required careful handling to manage toxic particulate risks safely.
2. Initial Assessment & Damage Report
Humeral Fracture: The left arm suffered a complete fracture at the humerus, suspended solely by remaining, fragile soft tissue.
Vascular Compromise: Multiple historic injected arteries and veins were snapped and micro-fractured due to structural stress.
Environmental Degradation: Heavy internal fouling, including decades of accumulated surface particulates and organic debris (insect remains).
3. Conservation Methodology & Rapid Stabilization
Debris Extraction: Non-destructive clearance of internal surface debris and insect particulates to expose original hidden anatomical structures.
Anatomical Realignment: Re-articulation and precise alignment of the fractured left humerus back to its original physiological posture.
Vascular Mending: Delicate repair and consolidation of fractured historical vasculature, securing fragile arterial networks without compromising tissue integrity.
Rapid Stabilization Protocol: Immediate structural consolidation executed under tight turnaround constraints to prevent further tissue loss or secondary fracture.
4. Conservation Outcome
Result: Structural integrity fully restored; left arm safely secured; historic vasculature mended and stabilized for long-term preservation.
