Conservation of the Leontiasis ossea skull.
This specimen arrived with extensive prior restoration using non-reversible materials, including heavy resin fills, misaligned zygomatics, and residual plaster from historical casting. A major postmortem fracture extended across the cranium and had been improperly filled rather than structurally reduced.
Treatment focused on the careful removal of intrusive materials and correction of prior repairs. Over 90% of non-original resin and adhesive was eliminated. The cranial fracture was fully reduced and stabilized, and both zygomatics were anatomically realigned and reattached using reversible conservation methods.
Additional cleaning revealed previously obscured tooth roots, along with further evidence of historical damage. Surface plaster and internal adhesive residues were reduced where safely possible.
A total of 68 g of non-original material was removed. The specimen is now structurally stable, treated with reversible materials, and suitable for responsible study and preservation.
